A View of Mobile Opportunity Areas from Bell Labs

Earlier this month I sat in on a live online chat event with Gee Rittenhouse, a VP at Bell Labs. Gee's topic was the worldwide reality of anywhere, anytime communications, but the chat touched on all sorts of mobile and wireless opportunities, and how we've only begun to recognize the opportunities that ubiquitous broadband suggests. A few notes on Gee's view of the future:
  • Gee likes the way Web 2.0 taps into crowdsourcing on both the front end--through user-generated content--and the back end--through what he called the ability to grab pieces of existing applications and combine them in entirely new ways. Millions of people are empowered to collaborate. He sees future evolution in the direction of adding more interactions such as enterprise mashups, telesensing, and presence.
  • He also sees a lot of potential in intersecting location with communication, for example, sending an SMS when the school bus is on the way or when someone you know enters or leaves an area or happens to be in the vicinity.
  • Related, he's very interested in "anywhere social networking," which can involve creating and sharing content on location, as part of the experience.
  • The "next big thing?" Gee says it's mobile video, once standards are ironed out.
  • Two areas he sees driving lots of bandwidth in the future are "better than being there"--data channels that enhance experiences with information beyond text and images--and machine-to-machine communication, such as your phone talking to your home appliances or a network of sensors.
  • Gee also noted that Bell Labs' efforts have been focused on mobile applications, but the interface is another area that's ripe for dramatic innovation.
